Lana Winters

Portrayed by Sarah Paulson. She has a girlfriend named Wendy Peyser and works as a reporter. Went to Briarcliff to get information on the abuse, but was committed by Sister Jude because she didn’t want the secrets getting out. She was also held for being a lesbian, which was seen as a mental illness in this time period.

Kit Walker

Portrayed by Evan Peters. Married to wife, Alma. His wife gets abducted by aliens and Kit gets committed to Briarcliff on false murder accusations.

Grace Bertrand

Portrayed by Lizzie Brocheré. Committed to Briarcliff for possibly murdering her whole family. Becomes Kit’s love interest.

Dr. Oliver Thredson

Portrayed by Zachary Quinto. A psychologist that works for Briarcliff. Murders women and uses their skin to make things. Raped Lana, causing her to become pregnant.

Sister Jude

Portrayed by Jessica Lange. Used to be a nightclub singer and had a drinking problem. Got into a drunk driving accident, killing a little girl, but never got caught. Is now the head of Briarcliff.

Sister Mary Eunice

Portrayed by Lily Rabe. Second to head of Briarcliff. Very sweet and innocent, does whatever people tell her to do. Gets possessed by the devil a few episodes in and turns into the complete opposite of herself. Causes trouble while possessed, until the devil is exorcised out at the end of the season.

Monsignor Timothy Howard

Portrayed by Joseph Fiennes. A priest at Briarcliff, has authority over Sister Jude. Wants to better his social standing with the church, even if it means lying and cheating his way to the top.

Dr. Arthur Arden

Portrayed by James Cromwell. Used to be a Nazi war criminal and is now a “doctor” at Briarcliff. He performs experiments on the patients at Briarcliff, using them as guinea pigs.
